Since the birth of modern electronic dance music in the late 80s and early 90s, the genre has transcended media, cultures and lifestyles. It has become a true constant not only in music, but also in pop culture in general. EDM, or electronic dance music, is a genre that has mostly been kept out of popular culture. However, has social media changed that? As new social networks and gaming platforms take over the lives of millions of people, musical trends evolve to adapt to their new needs.
Technically, EDM is its own genre under the broader umbrella of electronic music, rather than being a general term in and of itself. When EDM began to spread across the United States, the traditional tradition of adults making fun of young people's music reemerged like clockwork. The sixties gave rise to iconic bands such as Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, but it was the Beatles who occupied the musical throne and had an enormous influence on the way music was produced. It was at this time that the American music industry and press were promoting the term EDM, trying to change the name of rave culture in the United States.
But for an entire generation of young millennials, EDM was the first music that seemed to belong only to them and to us. The music industry revived with the digital musical instrument interface (or MIDI), which brought together computers, instruments and other equipment to communicate for the first time. Those who are deeply embedded in the EDM and rave community know the love and dedication that flow from artists and their music. Synthesizer music, or synthpop, was developed along with house music and electronic music during the “post-disco era” of the 80s. Electronic music is receiving attention from all sides of the major media as the musical genre gains relevance. The music industry through artists like Skrillex, a Grammy-winning EDM artist with dubstep, house, trap and more. And while many subgenres of dance music have inevitably been forgotten, dance music shows no signs of slowing down.
