DJs use equipment that allows them to play multiple sources of recorded music and mix them to create smooth transitions and unique arrangements of songs. Information from DJ tracks, including genre, beats per minute and musical keys, was used to quantify musical identity, and playlists were transformed into network data to measure social positions among DJs.
Specifically, the EDM market shows a rare trust in DJs, who are the dominant element in the musical process. To determine the musical identity of DJs based on music data, the characteristics of each DJ's tracks were analyzed to measure if the scope of their musical identity was clear and distinctive. DJs who also produce music have to generate a wave in the market, which is much more democratic than other popular musical genres, since dance floors generally decide what is a success or not. To achieve these objectives, this study focuses on the electronic dance music (EDM) DJ market, a growing specialized market in the music industry.
